Code Is Just a Shadow.
In his 1985 paper Programming as Theory Building, Peter Naur made a claim that most developers still haven't fully absorbed: the actual program lives exclusively in the developer's head. Not in the repo. Not in the docs. In the mind — as a living theory of how pieces connect, why decisions were made, and what the system is really trying to do.
The typed code is merely the shadow of that theory. It is the artifact, not the source.

The implication for 2025: AI now generates the shadow on demand. A well-prompted LLM can produce syntactically valid, seemingly complete code in seconds. But without a human holding the theory, the shadow is meaningless — and potentially dangerous. You get execution without understanding, output without intent, and complexity without a map.
This is not a subtle shift. It is a complete inversion of what makes an engineer valuable. The market for shadow-generators is now infinite and free. The market for theory-holders has never been tighter — or more critical.
The Trap of Comprehension Debt.
When AI generates the shadow but nobody builds the theory, the result is an incoherent house of cards. An app might look functional. It might even serve paying customers. But beneath the surface, it houses silent failure modes that are invisible until they're catastrophic.

A system is not a bunch of parts put together. It is a pattern of how parts affect each other over time. Change one, the others react. This is the definition that most engineers nominally agree with — and practically ignore when they're heads-down in a single service or feature branch.
What Systems Thinking Actually Means
  • Interconnectedness: No component is an island. Every change has blast radius — explicit and hidden.
  • Feedback Loops: Systems don't just react linearly; they amplify, dampen, and oscillate. A missed feedback loop is a ticking clock.
  • Emergence: The system-level behavior cannot be predicted by studying parts in isolation. This is where most AI-generated architectures fall apart.
  • The Jagged Frontier: Knowing exactly where the models nail the logic and where they quietly fail is now a core literacy. The models have sharp edges you cannot see without a systems lens.
Why This Is the Only Durable Skill
Every other skill in the engineering stack is being compressed by AI. Syntax knowledge: commoditized. Pattern recall: commoditized. Boilerplate generation: automated. What cannot be automated is the judgment required to model a system's behavior before it's built — to hold the map in your head and navigate by it.
The engineers who will matter in 2026 and beyond are those who can look at a proposed architecture and immediately see the hidden failure modes, the ownership gaps, the feedback loops that don't close. That is the skill. It cannot be prompted into existence.
The Architectural Diagnostic.
Before any architecture review, before any PR approval, before any agent-generated code ships — run these three questions. They are not optional checks. They are the minimum viable systems thinking test. If you can't answer all three confidently, the system is not ready.
Where Does State Live?
Who owns the truth? If two components each believe they own the canonical state, you already have a bug waiting for the right race condition to trigger it. State ownership must be explicit, singular, and documented — not inferred from the generated code.

  • What happens when state diverges between services?
Where Does Feedback Live?
How do you know it works? Not "how does a test say it works" — how do you know the live system is performing as intended? Logs, metrics, and error signals must be designed in, not bolted on. AI will not add them unless you demand them as a constraint.

Can you trace the blast radius of any component in your head before touching it? This is the ultimate test of whether the theory has been built. If the answer is "I don't know," that's not a gap in the docs — it's a gap in the systems model that owns the room.

The Broken Pipeline Is Snapping Back.
A Harvard study covering 62 million workers documented what the industry felt but hadn't quantified: companies slashed junior hiring sharply in 2023 and 2024, operating on the assumption that AI was a shortcut that would let small senior teams do the work of larger ones. It was a plausible hypothesis. It was wrong.

Treat AI as an infinitely patient senior dev who will never mock you for a basic question. Use it relentlessly — but never passively. Every generated output is a lesson waiting to be studied. Generate, then study the return. Rewrite one AI-generated component by hand each week to force slow thinking and build the mental model that speed erases. The goal is to build the theory in your head, not just the app on your screen.

Your edge is your scar tissue — the architectural instincts burned in by systems that failed in ways no documentation captures. Delegate boilerplate and grunt work aggressively to agents. Never blindly accept generated code. Treat every AI-generated PR as a negotiation. Challenge the agent: Walk me through this. What alternatives did you consider? Why this approach and not that one? This is not skepticism for its own sake — it's the practice of building the theory by interrogating the shadow. The engineers who do this consistently are building judgment at scale. The ones who don't are accumulating debt.
